Marriage is the social institution that binds together a man and a woman in a covenant, and with the promise of staying together through thick and thin. A wedding ceremony brings families and friends together, and this is followed by a simple feast known as the wedding reception. It is during this feast that the couple’s family and friends deliver wedding speeches. On that note, here is a sample father of the bride reception speech.

To begin your speech, include a warm greeting to your guests, as well as a short introduction about yourself. State how you are related to the bride, saying: “A pleasant afternoon, ladies and gentlemen! I’m sure that some of you don’t recognize this wrinkled face, and so for your benefit, please allow me to introduce myself. I am the bride’s proud father, everyone!” As you may have noticed, you have to make the beginning of the speech as warm and as welcoming as possible. Also, you have to ensure that your speech is appropriate for the guests who are present during the reception. If, for example, the bride and the groom chose to hold a very casual reception, then you have to clarify this with the guests and with the other speakers.

Proceed with something that goes like this: “I am privileged to stand here in front of all of you to welcome you in this celebration! To all of the guests, I want to thank each and every one of you for finding the time to be here and to share this wonderful day with us. Thank you for bearing witness to this momentous occasion and for sharing in the magic of this day. I know that this wedding wouldn’t be as memorable for the bride and the groom here if you were not here to share this joyous occasion with them.”

Once you are done thanking your guests and all the people who helped with the wedding preparations, proceed with your speech saying “It is the dream of almost any father to see his daughter get married. I am, to be honest, on the verge of tears – perhaps from sorrow or perhaps from joy; it’s really hard to know. But still, I am proud to see my daughter grow up to be a fine young woman. Seeing how she has grown to be a loving, intelligent, and kind-hearted young lady makes me so proud to call her my daughter.”

“Before I end my speech, I once again thank all of you for bearing witness to this momentous occasion. With that being said, I would like to propose a toast. To my daughter, the bride, and to my son-in-law!”
